Syntax doesn’t have to be that big scary term linguists use to talk about the way we arrange words and phrases to form sentences in a language. While we’re out there treating deficits in reading comprehension, narrative grammar, inferencing & written language, we (myself included) often overlook something that could be truly at the root of the problem— the syntax. Breakdowns in both understanding & using correct grammar could be what’s holding our learners back!

Yesterday was hands-down the hardest day of my career. Through processing of my own shock, denial & grief, I had to communicate the passing of one of my classroom paraprofessionals, a dear friend to me & father figure to my students, to my 8 adolescent students with autism. Death is difficult to process for adults, let alone children or teens, and I couldn’t fathom how I was going to break it to them. I am so fortunate to work I’m a place where I wasn’t alone and had a school counselor help me share the news with them. These are the lessons I learned from her that I wanted to share with you all in case you ever are faced with this daunting task. .

🗣Let’s talk about Apraxia. I’m currently working with a family who has received two conflicting evaluation reports. One that says evaluation for Apraxia was negative/inconclusive, and another that says highly suspected. Differential diagnosis in apraxia is key, as many of its characteristics are also representative of other speech disorders. Here’s a resource I created for some of the key markers I look for to differentiate between Childhood Apraxia of Speech and other speech disorders.
